Upcoming Events in Gloucester, Virginia

September 24

The past 50 years have seen an extraordinary resurgence in Osprey numbers globally — from the Chesapeake to Scotland and from Finland to Australia. This good-news story has been triggered not just by cleaner waters and less contaminated fish, but also by greening cultures — dedicated groups of people who have built and protected nest sites for Ospreys and have brought the species back to regions where it has been missing for decades. Alan Poole, author of a recently published book on the species (Ospreys: the Revival of a Global Raptor; Johns Hopkins Univ. Press, 2019), will lead us through this story with dazzling looks at some of the places where Ospreys are found, and with introductions to a few of the colorful characters who have helped make this Osprey revival possible.

Part travelogue, part biography, part scientific detective story: this talk will bring us up to date on the current state of one our best-loved birds of prey.

Alan Poole, an Associate of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, was editor of the Birds of North America life history series (18 volumes, 18,000 pages) for 22 years. He lives along the Westport River estuaries in southeastern Massachusetts, has been studying Ospreys for over 35 years, and has written two books on the species.

Dr. Poole will answer questions following his presentation. Questions can be submitted in Zoom using the Q&A function.

This lecture will be live streamed only. Registration is required due to limited webinar space. After Hours lectures begin at 7:00 PM and are designed for an adult audience but all ages are invited to watch.

October 16 @ 12:00 am - November 1 @ 12:00 am

Friends of Dragon Run (FODR) would like to welcome you to one of the most beautiful rivers in Virginia. We are dedicated to preserving this waterway and believe one of the best ways to do that is to show people how special it is by offering paddle trips.

Friends of Dragon Run’s fall paddle season will begin on Friday, October 16, 2020 and will end Sunday, November 1, 2020. We will paddle October 16, 17 (2 Paddles), 18, 19, 20, 23, 24 (2 paddles), 25, 26, 27, 30, 31 (2 paddles) and November 1. We will offer trips every day, weather permitting, by reservation only. Registration is currently open using a SignUp Genius link on the website www.dragonrun.org. Details about the paddle trips are displayed on the website by clicking on the Paddle Trip Info button.

Donations must be made at the time of reservation. The suggested amount is $50 per person. Without a donation, you may still paddle but not with an advance reservation. Refunds will be offered if FODR has to cancel the paddle due to weather or if a paddler guest is ill.

We provide a kayak for each paddler, a paddle, and life vest. We do not allow guests to bring their own boats.

As with our first-ever summer paddle, we will follow strict COVID-19 guidelines.
